The Gamma Kappa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau at University at Buffalo has had a busy past six months.

In June of 2025, we transitioned to new leadership in our chapter. Our new President is Dr. Amanda Adams, and Professor Mary Rhinehart is the President Elect and Governance Committee Member. Dr. Emily Vezina is our new Secretary, Governance Committee Member, and Newsletter Editor. Dr. Cheryl Spulecki is serving as our Awards Chair. Dr. Lynn Scott is our Vice President and Leadership Succession Committee Member, Dr. James Cozza is our Treasurer, Dr. Gail Markowski is our Leadership Succession Chair, and Dr. Martha Robinson remains a Leadership Succession Committee Member.

                We were notified that our chapter was awarded the Chapter Key Award on September 2, 2025. We are grateful for the efforts of our previous President, Tess Bernardo,  in helping us to achieve this prestigious honor.

                Professor Bernardo and Dr. Petrina Harrison attended the Sigma Theta Tau 48^th Biennial in Indianapolis, Indiana, as delegate representatives  on November 8-11, 2025.

On November 17, 2025, our chapter inducted 88 new members to our chapter. We had a wonderful ceremony for our University at Buffalo senior nursing students and their guests to celebrate their outstanding academic accomplishments.

The chapter will be holding a Welcome Back Event for the spring semester on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 11:15 am for our newest members. We are also planning community service events and chapter activities to promote the Sigma Theta Tau vision of nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service within our chapter.

Call for Scholarship Applications

Two annual scholarships will be awarded by Lambda-Upsilon Chapter-at-Large each year.  The scholarships were created in the spirit of the Sigma scroll which honors learning, and for professional endeavor which is one of the Sigma pillars.

The two scholarships will be in the amount of $500.00 each.  Lambda-Upsilon members in good standing will be eligible to apply for them.

The following parameters will apply to the scholarships:

1.The scholarship funds must be applied to a professional nursing organization sponsored event or professional nursing certification. 

2. Funds must be used within 6 months of being awarded either retrospectively or prospectively..

3. The application must be submitted between January 14-February 28^th.   Recipients will be notified in March.

4. Scholarships will be awarded based on the member being in good standing with the Chapter.

5. Scholarship committee members will determine the applicant awardees based on essay answer quality.

Applicants must submit a completed application and CV or resume (which includes scholarship, awards, education, publication) and the application questions (complete the questions in a short essay in 500 words or less).

Essay Questions (answer questions in 500 words or less)

• If awarded the scholarship, how do you intend to use the funds?
• What is your current contribution to the nursing profession?
• How would this scholarship impact this contribution and/or practice?

Funds are provided after receipts are obtained.
 Value of the Scholarships: The value of the two proposed scholarships will be to enhance and forward the tenets of the Sigma promotion of nursing excellence.  Sigma has celebrated education, leadership, and service, which are the focus of the scholarships. Awarding scholarship money will also serve to keep members engaged in the organization and in the enhancement of nursing as a profession. The Lambda Upsilon Chapter will fulfill its mission to promote members for higher service by helping them attend nursing events and receive education.

2026 Hypertension & Wellness Days

This signature Ethnic Health Institute (EHI) event aims to educate diverse communities about the risks of high blood pressure and help them learn whether they are showing signs of hypertension — often called the “silent killer” because people can have it for years without symptoms — which can lead to serious health problems like heart attack and stroke.  To learn about our impact last year, see the attached overview.

What: Blood pressure assessments & heart health/hypertension education for underserved communities.

Who: This event is open to SMU faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members, and licensed practitioners. This is an all-hands-on-deck event, we need all the support (clinical and non-clinical) we can get!

Where: Locations vary, please choose the site that works best for you via the sign-up link. We are pleased to be able to provide volunteer sites in Alameda, Hayward, Oakland, San Francisco, San Mateo, (Vallejo & Sacramento - TBA).

In-Person Screenings:  Feb 13, 15, and 22

Follow-up Calls: March 2-16

What: Volunteers to make follow-up calls to individuals screened by SMU students/faculty at Hypertension Sunday events to remind them to contact their PCP about their BP.

School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Limerick – December 15, 2025

Sigma Omega Epsilon at-Large Chapter proudly celebrated its Induction Ceremony and Masterclass at the University of Limerick on December 15th. The event brought together members, inductees, and guests for an inspiring afternoon of learning and recognition.

The ceremony opened with a warm address from Dr. Liz Wescott, President of Sigma Theta Tau International Honour Society of Nursing. Dr. Wescott generously shared her time and insights, welcoming inductees and members while inviting all to embrace Sigma’s Call to Action 2025–2027: “Lead Together – Our Voice, Our Value, Our Impact, across our global communities, across nursing, and across Sigma.”

Following this, attendees enjoyed a thought-provoking Masterclass delivered by Ms. Catriona Ahern, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Cardiac Rehabilitation at University Hospital Limerick. Ms. Ahern shared her expertise on Heart Disease, Modifiable Risk Factors, and Cardiac Rehabilitation, sparking lively discussion and engagement among participants.

The highlight of the day was the Induction Ceremony, led by Chapter President Dr. Liz Kingston and Vice-President & Chapter Secretary Dr. Jill Murphy, as they proudly welcomed sixteen new members into the chapter. Omega Epsilon at-Large Chapter extends heartfelt thanks to the board and committee members, our new members and their families, and all chapter members who travelled to join us for this special celebration. We also wish to acknowledge and thank everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this day possible, whose dedication and support ensured its success.

I am sincerely grateful for being selected as a recipient of this scholarship. Your generosity supports my educational journey and helps lighten the financial burden as I continue advancing in my nursing career. The scholarship will help cover a range of academic expenses, allowing me to balance my studies, clinical hours, and personal responsibilities more effectively. With this support, I can concentrate on building the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. Thank you for believing in my potential and investing in my future.

Constance Hall Scholarship Recipients

Eleni Hansen, RN

I am honored to be receiving this scholarship. The funds will directly support my dissertation coursework and research which is focused on the use of inclusive teaching strategies in nursing education, enabling me to develop and implement teaching approaches that promote belonging, accessibility, and academic success for all nursing students. I am hoping to be finished my studies within the next year and be able to share meaningful ways to provide inclusive learning strategies by using Universal Design for Learning to help all students in nursing programs.

Shaquana Jones, RN

I am very excited and on my way to clinical at the same time. I plan to use these scholarship funds primarily for tuition costs to help reduce my need for student loans and allow me to focus more on my studies in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at Capella University. This scholarship will also help alleviate financial stress, allowing me to cut back on work hours and instead join nursing research, improving my academic performance and skills in the field as a professional nurse. Specifically, this support will help me dedicate more time to my coursework, relevant practicum hours, and clinical hours, enabling me to fully engage in my degree and work toward my goal of becoming a future Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice future provider, to give back to my community. I am ever grateful and very humbled to have been selected for Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Omega Gamma Constance Hall Scholarship.

Dr. Ashley Vieira

The Constance Hall Scholarship will support my participation in the Association for Nursing Professional Development Conference as I begin my role as the newly appointed Accredited Program Provider Director. Attending this conference will allow me to learn from national experts, share my work, and connect with NPD colleagues nationwide while gaining practical strategies to enhance our accredited provider unit. This experience will strengthen my leadership, inspire innovation, and allow me to bring forward new ideas that benefit both our organization and the broader nursing professional development community.

Elise Wynn, RN

I currently work as an outpatient neurology RN, where I care for many patients living with Parkinson’s disease. I am pursuing a master’s degree in nursing informatics, and this scholarship will help support me as I continue my education. My hope is to use this degree to better help my Parkinson’s patients feel more confident using technology in ways that truly support their care, independence, and day-to-day lives.

•Recommendation by two faculty members, AND

•Enrolled and have completed 50% of the nursing bachelor's curriculum

• Minimum grade point average of 3.0

• Ranking in the top 35th percentile of their nursing class

For Community Nurse Leaders:

•Recommendation from two current members, AND

•Demonstrates active leadership and a minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in any field.

Induction will take place on March 7, 2026, at 1:00 pm in the Student Center at Sonoma State University, and your presence is required to accept your new membership into the Lambda Gamma Chapter. If you cannot attend this ceremony or miss the application deadline, please plan to apply next year.

Please return your completed application directly to stti@sonoma.edu, and only electronically submitted applications will be reviewed & uploaded into the system. We require your application and unofficial transcripts by January 10, 2025. When chosen, you will receive an invitation via email to join Lambda Gamma and Sigma Nursing 3-4 weeks prior to the ceremony. Otherwise, your membership certificate may not arrive in time for the induction ceremony. You will need to join both the International Chapter and the local chapter for initial membership. When Evelyn Marshall-King (governance committee member) started a toy collection on campus this November, she knew there wasn't much notice. She was hoping to collect 20-30 toys, and our chapter members did not disappoint. On December 23rd, the distribution took place at Northcott Neighborhood House.

Evelyn stated, "I really wanted us to give back in a way that would make Christmas special for those struggling to do so. Walking into the center and seeing how massive the community came together for these children made tears come to my eyes. No child deserves to not enjoy this holiday season."

Upper Bay provides a full spectrum of mental health services, including custodial care for 40 adults living with severe and persistent mental illness through their residential program. This year proudly marks our 24th year partnering together to brighten the holidays for these clients.

48^th Biennial Convention November 2025 Report

On Monday, November 10 and Tuesday November 11, 2025, Immediate Past President Barbara Lovell-Martin and I, President Raquel Brown, attended the delegate session of the 48^th Biennial Convention of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI). They had strict parliamentary procedures and used Robert’s Rules 12^th edition. All delegates had to be seated, both virtual and in-person no later than 10 minutes before the proceedings began.  

The president Sandra Bibb led the proceedings. Voting for the new board of STTI occurred as well as votes for amendments to the bylaws and resolutions. The state of the organization was reported including accomplishments and financial health. The new Board was announced.

The president for the 2025-2027 biennium Liz Wescott presented the new call to action. The new call to action is “Lead Together”. In this call to action, we are challenged to elevate “Our Voice”, advance “Our Value”, and expand “Our Impact”. With that charge, I say let’s do this.

Yay – it’s that time again!  We are back for another year of gift wrapping fun!  This project is a Christmas tradition for many of our volunteers and it’s a wonderful way to have fun, connect with members of our community, wrap presents and raise money for the homeless at ANEW Place.

For our 33rd season at the University Mall, we will be providing gift wrapping services from
Black Friday, November 28 through Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 2025.

Hello members! As we enter the cold nights of winter, join us for a night of warmth, networking, dinner, and a wonderful conversation. This is an informal night for members to get together and enjoy the company of nurse leaders, faculty, and students. We will all order off the restaurant menu giving you plenty of flexibility in choices and price. You are also welcome to come and network without dinner if you choose. We had a great time last year and look forward to getting together again this winter.

Hello! As we head into the holiday season, I invite you to think about UN Sustainable Development Goal: Responsible Consumption and Production. Here are a few facts to consider:

• Sustainable consumption and production are key to sustaining current and future generations
• Our planet is running out of resources but populations are continuing to grow. If the global population reaches 9.8 billion by 2050, the equivalent of almost three planets will be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles.

The Sigma Biennial Convention this past weekend was amazing! There were so many wonderful presentations given and our chapter was strong in representation. We also got the Key Award for the 8th time!

The 2025 NP Week theme is NPs: Trusted Voices, Proven Care. Celebrate November 9-15, 2025.

On October 30, 2025, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) hosted a hybrid Charter Amendment Ceremony to grow the Eta Iota at-Large Chapter by including Keene State College and SNHU as new institutional members. Sigma Director, Dr. Jennifer Saylor from the University of Delaware, was the presiding Chartering Officer for the ceremony. We welcomed new inductees, transfers, and multi-chapter members at this time as well. 

This ceremony was the culmination of hard work and dedication of a diverse team of Eta Iota at-Large board members and nursing partners. Congratulations to our newest members, Keene State College and SNHU!

The Zeta Phi at Large Chapter would like to congratulate our very own, Dr. Holly Hall, Current Past President who was just elected to the Governance Committee of Sigma Theta Tau International at the Sigma Biennial Convention!!!  She will be formally installed this afternoon at the delegates convention.  Dr. Hall your chapter is proud of your accomplishment and look forward to continuing to work with you and others in international leadership positions!!! Congratulations again, Dr. Hall!!!!!

Day 2 of the Sigma Biennial Convention began with a moment we’ll never forget: watching our Chapter President, Dr. Christine Platt, receive the international Audrey Hepburn Award for Contributions to the Health and Welfare of Children.

This prestigious international award honors Christine’s lifelong dedication to improving the health and well-being of children; a legacy built on compassion, advocacy, and the belief that nursing changes lives across generations. 🌍

Our chapter couldn’t have been prouder (or louder!) as she crossed the stage: a true leader who embodies what it means to serve with heart, courage, and excellence. 💜

Between all the fun and celebration at Sigma’s Biennial Convention, our chapter also spent time connecting with incredible colleagues from Jamaica, Sierra Leone, and Virginia.

Together, we dreamed up new partnerships in global health and nursing education: conversations that reminded us how powerful nursing can be when it crosses borders, shares wisdom, and unites for a healthier world. 🌍✨

This year our chapter was honored with the Chapter of Excellence Award, recognizing our ongoing commitment to leadership, scholarship, and service. 🌟

And because excellence looks good in motion, we celebrated the Sigma way: with a full-on dance-off with Sigma President Dr. Sandra Bibb! The music was loud, the energy was high, and the joy was absolutely contagious.

It was the perfect reminder to us of what it means to be part of a global community of nurses who lead, lift, and celebrate one another. 💜✨

Our chapter held its induction ceremony on October 17, 2025, and it was a wonderful event! We are proud to welcome our newest inductees to Sigma Kappa Delta.

Day 1 of the Sigma 48th Biennial Convention was one for the books! 📚

We kicked off the morning inspired by plenary speaker Sandra Bibb, who reminded us what it means to lead as international nurse leaders: united under the beautiful display of global flags flying together for Sigma’s mission of excellence and service. 🌍

👏 Huge applause to Amanda and Christine, our phenomenal moderators, who kept every session flowing with professionalism and energy!

And a standing ovation for Emma and Annalee: our student presenters who absolutely wowed a packed room of nurse educators with their passionate, research-driven work on nurse well-being and preparing the next generation of leaders. 🌱📚

After a day of sessions and extreme networking (yes, hundreds of recruiters from sim tech to grad schools!), we wrapped up with a delicious dinner at The Inferno Room, a local gem of tiki-inspired cuisine, and finished strong at The Chocolate Café, which could easily rival Willy Wonka’s factory in flavor and fun! 🍫✨

Eta Beta Chapter has again received the Key Award! Drs. Cofer and Kokoszka accepted the award at the Biennial convention.
